Love watching Chris Hayes' show. Not a fan of social media -- or unsocial media, as I call it. Other than AMget, I tried it and left it all behind. I love my privacy (as much as one can have knowing AI's are busily collecting all my info). I don't care about "likes" or amassing "friends" I don't know. One person I ran across actually thought it was an insult to me to point out that I didn't have more than a few dozen friends on FB. Didn't bother me in the least. I don't miss the trolls, misinformation, and sniping. Literally made my life better without any of it.

Growing up in the '50's, we were taught "honesty is the best policy." But somehow, for the most part due to GOP politicians embracing lying to a pathological degree, that cultural ethos has been destroyed! It seems to have come to a head with Mr. T and his team of misfits. Sadly I don't see how that's going to get any better, and quite probably much worse, in the near term. But "Christian conservatives" share in that blame, with the insistence that the Bible was "written by God." As BIG LIES go, that one's the biggest... Mr. T insisting he won re-election is another 5th Column style Lie that's really tearing this country apart. And he does not care. It's no surprise that the folks who believe the first BIG LIE, are also fans of the second. While I'm a big fan of Jesus, and the Divine Father, it looks like that kind of religion has to die first, in order to pop the pimple...

This issue looks very similar to when email first became a thing... the anonymity of it all seemed to give many people (sadly myself included) the freedom to give vent to whatever they were feeling at the time. But then email etiquette came along and we learned how to behave ourselves for the most part... Social Media seems to be very similar, but on a larger scale. And while Facebook for example, may instruct users to be respectful, it's likely to be in that long agreement that everybody's suppose to sign, but which very few ever actually read. (I'm rarely on FB so I'm not all that familiar with their protocols.) If our religious institutions were not in the middle of falling apart due to being so archaic, they should have been the ones to remind everybody to loving, even though we can't see who is reading our posts. As it is, the social ethos at the moment, is to be hypercritical, of enemies, and allies. That has to change, hopefully for the better, but most of our leaders are so corrupt, that we are unlikely to see any improvements in the near term.

I think to say "we're meant to interact this particular way" is fundamentally incorrect. We have traditionally formed relationships in the way he's referring, but this is just a new and different way to interact. It's easy to look at how things worked before and rag on the way things are evolving without any idea of how things will continue to evolve. I'm not saying social media is good or bad, but to say this is bad because it's not how things worked before is close minded, man-yells-at-clouds thinking.

@Daniel Clark AMget is not a form of social media if you turn off notifications. It then becomes a way to learn, and maybe contribute a little something. Facebook is designed to put a spotlight on you. Thats the part thats bad. I've found that if you use facebook like its linkedin, it becomes way less toxic. Mostly because the people who use it like have restraint. Of course that doesnt fix everything. I once saw a person on linkedin ask the president to call him so they could discuss the subsidy together. The post was about a help hotline. I couldn't believe someone would be that stupid and reveal their identity at the same time :P

@Daniel Clark respectfully, I disagree, AMget follows a more forum style than a social format. It's not designed to be the focal point of your online experience. As for FB requirement for a job, Ive turned down two, threatened to sue the third, they dropped the requirement because you can't force an employee give up their privacy. My current employer was confused and elated when they don't find any social media accounts and was elated to learn didn't have one, funny how productivity drops when Facebook is accessable.

In one sentence you summed up why I've been off social media platforms for 10+ years now. Even then I could sense the dangers inherent to Facebook. The "dopamine hit" of having people "like" your comments and increasing your entourage of "friends" who only know the prettiest version of "you" possible. Yeah......if that's being "social" then I haven't used enough "quotations" in this "post." (EDIT: please "like" this post since I lack FB to validate my caveman existence).

Social Media always has. Clickbait and deceptive titles and images to get clicks and views, misinformation, providing open channels for people to flood their wing views upon everyone else, cyberbullying. A random person being mean to you is no different than someone who decides to bully you at school while everyone else is being nice. Things like that happened 40 years ago. Things are no different today, it just happens in a venue where it happens 10x more often and more easily.

Well, I think this is not quite accurate. There are very positve sides regarding this democratization. Social Media is not only wreaking psychological havoc on people. It is an addition to human communication and not a replacement of traditional forms of communication. That´s my opinion and I do not deny that there a grave dangers if used with criminal intent. But listening to this segment, I have many questions about the use of terms like "the world", "strangers" and such...

I guess we all have to learn how to deal with it in an healthy matter. Social media can be a great asset. Just some examples: *As a non-american, the political situation in the USA is now more realistic for me than in the time before social media. I don't use Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. They don't appeal to me. Why would I post pictures for the whole world to see. Or tweets about what I had for lunch. * I do like the comments section of YT. In real life I live in some kind of bubble (like everyone else) and I would not meet or communicate with right wingers like the Trump fans. Now I do and I have had some decent exchanges of thoughts. I consider that little gems. If someone reacts agressive or insulting, I just ignore it. It is still enligthning to know how people think, even If it is total foreign to you. It also explains a lot of the current situation in the USA and how it influences the situation in my own country. However, I will not post on Fox News: Too toxic. * I can find a lot about my hobby: playing saxophone and exchange tips with other players. * There is a reaction channel of an American guy who started reacting to Dutch music and somehow got fascinated with the country. He is now basically exploring the country by reacting on video's about traditional Dutch events, the fight against water, History etc. A lot of fun and increasing mutual understanding. It is great to see your own country through the eyes of an outsider.

This was the exact topic of my thesis that I submitted this week. We are experiencing what I call "the death of nuance" (what Chris calls psychological havoc) when it is easier to throw out comments and ideas we would never say in face-to-face conversation with those we know, with no immediate repercussions in sight. Anyone differing from our own views can be painted with a brush that states they're extreme and unlike us. We can't go back to a time without this interconnectedness, but we can use our awareness of these issues to act better in these online public spaces.

@Dea Indeed. Whole Forums and AMget channels are affected by toxic, extreme right men. It seems they have their own chatgroups to promote attacks on any person or outlet that doesn't look or think like them. Bullying is easy if you don't care about the truth or about other people. And this toxic, fighting atmosphere is liked by noone, so their actions are extremely effective...

@Rogue Ninja Not only that, but there is a real horrorshow on most platforms if women raise their voices and opinions. We see it here with more young women leaving politics and public figures avoiding having strong opinions on topics that might anger (the often middleaged) men with a grudge against young females who dare speak up. I've recieved doxxing, blatant horrible misogyny and all kinds in between when I use my real name in comment sections in news outlets or facebook etc. If I'm neutral and they can't immidiately know what gender I am, I don't get nearly as much hate.

Some people wish they had the ability to be a mind reader. In a way, we are all mind readers now, because of social media. One big downside is that we now have access to the thoughts of our most obnoxious acquaintances and strangers we usually try to avoid. I quit Facebook last year when I stopped wanting to know who, among my friends, were inconsiderate/anti-vaxx/proudly ignorant. Social media gave me information about my family and friends that I no longer wanted. I feel less connected with the world, but mind reading is overrated.

Chris Hayes is soooo good. No one does what he does better. Broad strokes - the broadest - but with a meticulous attention to detail: delivered with passion, on a plate made from compassion. But, ever the Realist and pragmatist: no “bleeding heart” when it comes to acknowledging the harsh realities of life. Actions have consequences. And, people bear the scars - or worse - of their mistakes, or even just bad luck. But, he can pull it all together for you and weave a “tapestry” for us that could sit with immense pride amongst its “peers” in the town of Bayeux.

And vice versa: It is weird to be able to know so much about strangers. That ability used to be restricted to fiction, and a few urban neighbors. That makes us feel weird, because we are behaving in socially uncomfortable ways.

I think it has a lot to do with why ppl are introverted or need to recharge their social battery, not that ppl weren't like that at all before the internet, but we're constantly experiencing mini social interactions that are draining but not very restoring on the internet, like this right now. Just in watching this video i watched two ppl i don't know have a conversation, and read at least a dozen ppl's opinions about it, and am now responding to yours. I don't have any prior knowledge abt how you converse with ppl so im basically meeting an onslaught of new ppl while often hearing their most controversial opinions. No wonder i need to rest after talking to ppl in person, my rest involves more social input

Yeah I feel that way about Venmo. It shows you who paid what to who. WHY in the world would any payment system need a social component like that??? Why would anyone care or even want to know what other people paid or worse, what I paid??? Financial info should be private. So invasive and creepy.

Dunbar's Number has historically shown that humans interact best within the confines of 150 people and under. In the age of social media, we can be bombarded with interactions from anyone with an account, whether they're people we know, or celebrities we can draw unhealthy comparisons to. We weren't "designed" for this level of interactability. It's really messing some people up (primarily seen in younger individuals).

Once we're hooked, all we are is a number being sold to ad companies. It's not about making connections, it's about sales.

I just never made an account. Worked fine. Its like I didnt exist to the broader community, which enabled me to build relationships with individual people without interference. Impossible to tag someone or be cyber passive aggressive towards someone who doesn't exist. Provided an insane amount of immunity drama and BS. People rely on tags to save them the time of searching. Without a tag, very few people look. If you have no pictures online, your that much more immune. Then you just go about your life honestly and are judged by the ones you personally interact with. If anything, it started going downhill after that type of isolation ended, and recovered when I realized the problem. You cant be friends with a group. Groups are tools and people treat them like tools. You can only be friends with people.

Just left a comment about how I consider this internet/social media age a double edged sword that has brought about the death of nuance. Even if we agree about a hundred things, the one thing we may not see eye to eye on is often taken hold of and amplified until we see each other as dehumanized "other" and no longer interact. We need a better way.
