Football is called that because originally you had to kick (like an extra point now) to score. Getting to the end zone was not worth anything but gave you the right to kick for points. At least it has scoring...

Many of the football sports around the world have a common evolutionary root. The proto football game was likely called football because it was played on foot to differentiate it from medieval mounted games. The proto sport likely had less defined rules, and the ball would be picked up kicked thrown whatever as long as the players were happy. Over time different sports developed more precise rules. Association football, rugby, gridiron football, Australian rules football, and probably other sports that I am less familiar with are all frequently just called football in any area where they are the most popular football game played there. And I think that's cool. No need to get up in arms about which game of that lineage is most deserving of the name. We can share.

I am someone who despises cursing and swearing. Btw, I find it funny that swearing is cursing but people say "I swear to God". I know the meaning but it still makes me grind imagining them cursing to God. Anyways, I don't like cursing but Roy Kent does it like art. It's not just part of his character, but part of his speech. Take out the curses and the words suddenly lose their meaning. He can't just say "NO". He HAS to say "F No". So it doesn't bother me when he says too many times to count "like in the showgirls movie".

I enjoy American football, but it’s 3-4 hours of watching only 20-ish minutes of actual action. There’s a lot to respect about it, but it’s clear why it’s a niche sport that’s only popular in one country in the whole world (two if you count the CFL). Yes, it has its fans in other countries, but no leagues. Look at Rugby for example. Rugby is similar and arguably more physically demanding (i.e, no protection, continuous action, less time to rest) than American Football. But globally it’s far more popular. Why? Because there’s no "break every three seconds", it’s far less complicated, and it flows more. If a variation of American football existed that wasn’t so laborious to watch, less staccato, and generally simpler to just show up and play, then I could see it being more popular globally. With that last point in mind; Rugby has it 7s and Rugby League, and cricket has its T20. These variations of the sport were more visually digestible for the viewers and easier to play, yet maintained the spirit of the original sports. As a result, so many new markets opened up and new fans/leagues/tournaments were created all over the world. Therefore, if someone could come up with a shortened version of the NFL (and I know Arena football is a niche sport too) that people could just show up and play, there’s nothing to stop it being a major global sport, rather than just America’s little game.

American Football is kinda interesting. It's all about gaining ground to reach the goal. -Basically, the team on Offense has 4 chances ("downs") to move the ball forward 10 Yards. It's called a "down" because the ball-holder gets tackled to the ground by Defense. The ball can be passed between multiple people on Offense. -The team on Defense opposes their advance and tries to tackle the person with the ball and take the ball. -If the Offense can get over the 10Y marker (yellow) within 4 tries, the tries/downs reset and they start again from that new line. -If the Offense's ball-holder gets past the Defense without going down, he can run it to the endzone/goal for a "touch-down" (6 Points). -If the Offense gets close to their goal but can't get through Defense, they can attempt to kick the ball through the Yellow uprights for a field goal (3 Points) -If the Offense drops the ball while attempting to move forward (fumble), the Defense can grab the ball to gain control of it and they become the Offense. -If the Defense prevents the ball from crossing the 10Y line within 4 downs, they gain control of the ball and become the Offense. These are the basics that should allow you to follow the game better. There's still bunch more Rules that come up in specific situations, as well as penalties(fouls), but you learn as you watch with others.
